Progress Report on Masonic Monument Project
|
|
by Leon Knudson, Chairman
Just a short note to bring each of you up-to-date as to the status of fund-raising for the Monument to be erected at the RI Veterans' Cemetery in honor of our Brethren who have faithfully served our country in times of peace and conflict. As of the date I am writing this article (August 4th) Grand Lodge has received $50,039.47 in contributions and interest on funds deposited. We have firm commitments for an additional $29,600 and have been informed by one of our members that his firm will do the excavation and backfilling work for the foundations of the monument as a donation. This leaves us short of our goal by about $25,000 when one deducts the estimated cost for excavation work from the estimate of $110,000 for the entire project.
I know of at least one concordant body that has not committed to a donation yet but will be considering making one at their next stated meeting. I am confident that there are some Lodges and other concordant bodies in the same situation.
In regards to the letter sent to each member of the Craft telling them of our need for their individual financial support, in the majority of instances, it is getting distributed as I write this article. Brethren, when you read that letter please remember that every donation received regardless of amount will be gratefully appreciated.
For those who have already donated to this project, I thank you for your support. To those who have not done so please consider it.
I will keep you informed on the status of this project throughout the coming months.

“The Next Great Mason”, a 15-minute video produced by
the Grand Lodge of Rhode Island Free and Accepted Masons, will be shown to the
public for the first time at the Washington County Fair in Richmond, RI.
This new video, which provides an introduction to the fraternal organization,
will be shown continuously at the Rhode Island Freemasons’ Child Identification
Program (CHIP) tent at the fair on Thursday and Friday, Aug. 14 and 15.
The video briefly traces the history of Freemasonry from its origins in ancient
times through its development in the Middle Ages as a craft guild for builders
of Europe’s cathedrals to its evolution as a social organization. The focus of
the video is on the philosophy of Freemasonry and its goal of offering men of
all faiths the opportunity to join in comradeship and to work together for
charitable purposes. Also included is a brief introduction to other Masonic
organizations including the Order of the Eastern Star for men and women, the
Order of the Rainbow for young women, and the Order of DeMolay for young men.
The video describes Freemasonry’s role in the American Revolution and Rhode
Island’s rich Masonic heritage that began in 1749 with the establishment of St.
John’s Lodge in Newport.
“Our goal is to provide the public with a comprehensive picture of Freemasonry’s
roots, its goals and its successes, such as our work through the Shrine Burn
Centers and Orthopedic Hospitals, the Centers for Learning Disabilities through
the Scottish Rite organization” said Joseph B. Brearley, Grand Master of Masons
for the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.
The video has been distributed to Masonic Lodges throughout the state and to
some public libraries. To view the video online please choose one of the
