Grand Master

Grand Master's Message

March, 2008

March brings forth an interesting transition.  Midway through the month occurs the vernal equinox, the time when day and night are equal in length. It is the point marking the changeover from the darkness of winter into the light of spring. It reminds one of the transformations a new Masonic initiate undergoes as he is brought from darkness to light. This metamorphosis is currently occurring throughout Rhode Island Freemasonry.

A survey of activities around the jurisdiction reveals new Masons are being created in every lodge and in some instances in large numbers. I have even heard the complaint that at times it is difficult to handle the number of candidates being initiated. Personally, this is one problem I like having the pleasure of dealing with.  But why is this situation occurring? What, if anything, has changed, stimulating what I would conservatively classify as an upswing in interest in our fraternity?  Probably there are numerous forces at play.  Perhaps it is due to the recent attention our fraternity has received at the hands of a curious media, precipitated by Hollywood and a score of Masonic related novels. Or maybe it is a result of Freemasonry throughout our land being more aggressive and forthcoming about the fraternity itself. Maybe the internet and the information superhighway have facilitated information which heretofore may have been unavailable to those with interest. Or perhaps, as I would like to believe, the time tested philosophy and principals of freemasonry provides a source of opportunity for that which men of this day and age are actively in search of to bring quality of meaning to their very existence.

Regardless of the reason(s), we as Freemasons have opportunity to refortify our great fraternity. It is imperative that we not squander any opportunity. An influx of new brethren requires us to take a serious look at the manner in which our lodges have been conducting themselves over the past several decades. The successful lodges have gradually been making changes as needed, but I know there are others that will need to take a hard look at their situations to identify problem areas and then make hard choices and changes.

Now is the time for action my brothers. The opportunity is here. We have an individual as well as collective interest and responsibility to rededicate ourselves to the basics of the craft. If we consciously make an effort to keep our current momentum moving forward we can make great strides towards a prosperous future. It is our obligation to our fraternity and to each other.  Remember, working together we can accomplish great things. May the Supreme Architect of the Universe be with you and guide you in your endeavors.
